Robert MacGill is a trial lawyer who represents companies in high-stakes commercial litigation throughout the United States. His clients have included Fortune 50 companies, U.S. and foreign-domiciled businesses, state and local governments, and other organizations confronting significant litigation risk.
Rob has served as national litigation counsel to major industrial, agricultural, real estate, and transportation companies. His work includes federal antitrust litigation, national class actions, trade-secret and unfair-competition disputes, complex contract and corporate litigation, and cases involving substantial potential verdicts.
His practice is deliberately balanced between plaintiff and defense work. Rob has defended companies against significant commercial claims and has also prosecuted major claims on behalf of corporate clients. His plaintiff-side experience includes two verdicts recognized among the Top 100 verdicts in the United States.
That experience on both sides of the courtroom informs his approach to litigation. Understanding how a substantial plaintiff's case is developed, valued, and tried can be particularly useful in defending one. Conversely, decades of representing sophisticated corporate defendants bring discipline to evaluating risk, controlling discovery, narrowing issues, and positioning affirmative claims for trial or resolution.
Nationally Recognized Litigation Experience.
Rob was named to the 2027 Lawdragon 500 Leading Litigators in America for Commercial Litigation. He has also been recognized by Best Lawyers, Benchmark Litigation, and other national legal publications and ranking organizations.
His national recognition spans much of his career. Lawdragon first selected Rob for its Lawdragon 500 twenty years ago, while he practiced at a large national law firm. His 2027 recognition comes after his establishment of MacGill PC as an independent commercial litigation firm.
Rob's work has been featured by national and international media, including NBC, CBS, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The National Law Journal, The London Times, USA Today, The Economist, and Dow Jones News Service.

Complex Cases. Focused Teams.
Rob founded MacGill PC around the proposition that sophisticated commercial litigation does not require large litigation teams.
MacGill PC combines experienced trial lawyers, lean staffing, sophisticated legal research, and modern technology to handle complex matters efficiently. Rob is directly involved in the strategy, analysis, and execution of the matters he handles rather than delegating core litigation responsibilities through multiple levels of staffing.
The firm also uses advanced artificial-intelligence and other technology tools where appropriate to accelerate research, analyze complex records, test legal arguments, and increase lawyer productivity. Those tools supplement - not replace - the judgment and accountability of experienced counsel.
The objective is to provide clients with the capabilities required for major commercial litigation while maintaining the responsiveness, efficiency, and direct senior-lawyer involvement of a focused litigation boutique.

Representative Experience.
Rob’s trial and appellate results appear in reported decisions in state and federal courts. Rob's experience includes:
Representing companies in federal antitrust litigation throughout the United States;
Serving as national litigation counsel to major corporate clients;
Defending national and putative class actions;
Prosecuting and defending substantial trade-secret, unfair-competition, contract, and corporate disputes;
Trying complex commercial cases for both plaintiffs and defendants;
Representing U.S. and foreign-domiciled companies in trial and appellate courts;
Representing state and local governments in disputes involving substantial financial exposure and significant public-policy issues; and
Handling commercial arbitrations and other proceedings involving substantial economic stakes.
-

A Trial Lawyer's Perspective.
Rob approaches litigation as a business problem as well as a legal one. Early case strategy focuses on identifying the issues that will ultimately determine the dispute, developing the evidentiary record around those issues, and establishing a realistic path to dispositive relief, settlement, or trial.
The size of the opposing legal team does not dictate MacGill PC's approach. Rob and the firm's lawyers regularly litigate matters involving major national and international law firms.
The firm's model is intentionally different: experienced lawyers, focused teams, disciplined economics, and technology used to make those lawyers more effective.
